What to expect on one of the Wild Plant Guide UK foraging courses?
These UK foraging courses are known for being fun and informative, and loaded with plants to meet, discuss, and taste! Since I began my wild plant teaching adventures, I have now led more than 250 foraging courses and walks in the last 7 years, sharing my passion with more than 2000 people along the way.
I have been researching and experimenting with wild plants for almost 20 years which brings a balanced and practical mix of of science, folklore, and history, together with seasoned experience of both the traditional and current uses of edible and medicinal plants.
All attendees on my foraging courses and walks will get to try a selection of seasonal wild foods, during and after the walk, and sometimes in the summer I will bring the hamper and we have a picnic, tea and cake, and the odd shot of hedgerow liqueur!
What will I see and learn on one your UK foraging courses?
As you may be discovering from a search of ‘UK foraging courses’ in any search engine, not all foraging courses are equal. Whie it is great that so many people are wanting to share whatever knowledge they have recently aquired, I personally feel you can’t get better than qualified and seasoned, tutors…actual experienced guides.
There are in truth very few foraging tutors I would pay money too, but I would happily go on a course with Marcus Harrison down in Cornwall, Fergus the forager over in Kent and Mark Williams up in Scotland. These guys all have a real passion, and all really know their onions.
On my Wild Plant Guide foraging courses in the spring, summer, and autumn, you will soon discover that we can only ever begin to scratch the surface of the possibilities and opportunities that exist for foraging here in Britain. Typically we will meet around 25 plants on each 2.5 hour walk.
My walks are always circular routes. And we don’t ever have to walk very far, because there are always so many plants of interest everywhere.
This means that my UK foraging courses are generally suitable for people with access issues. If this includes you, then please contact me to discuss it further, because I would like, where possible to accommodate everyone.
What we see on any given walk also depends on the habitats we are visiting. Every walk is by nature, different to the last. Some habitats are home to a greater number of plants than others, as my ‘where to forage’ guide explains. Over the course of a year I try and visit as many different habitats as possible.
Because I return to the same locations throughout the year, in order to thoroughly catalogue and share what plants grows where, this in turn will enable your personal picture of the flora of your local area to quickly become more complete.

Leaves and shoots are the main feature of spring, whereas flowers, fruits, and seeds come with summer. Autumn is always abundant with a second growth spurt of leaves, and many fruits, roots, seeds, and fungi to choose from, while winter offers more than you think, but can easily be provided for from the previous three seasons, if we take advantage of gluts and preserve them.
During the regular seasonal periods of gluts, I host courses on preserving wild foods such as elderflower cordial, hogweed chutney’s, hawthorn ketchups, rosehip syrups and more…
During the winter, even with fewer species around to choose from, it is still commonplace on my walks to find and discuss approximately 15 -20 different plants without trying too hard. Fast track your learning on my UK foraging courses
As well as marrying a range of medicinal and edible information on my walks, I teach the easy-to-learn ‘patterns method’ of plant identification. This simple method allow us to identify unknown plants in the field using observable patterns that plant families produce.
So now when chancing across flowers with four petals in a cross, and six stamens in the centre, this pattern should start to trigger bells, because that plant could well be one of the 3,300 edible brassica species that grow worldwide. Each brassica species has flowers as just described.
The simple-to-remember ‘patterns method’ really does present a system to help fast track your foraging. No more thumbing through hundreds of photos trying to match what you hold to a drawing. The patterns of plants allow us to hone in on a plant family, often providing many clues as to edibility or otherwise.

I host scheduled walks and courses all-year-round in various locations, in a number of different towns and cities throughout Southern Britain, (and increasingly further north), to enable as many people as possible to access them, and because the more I travel, the more plants I am likely tp meet.
Private tailored walks are most welcome. In the past I have hosted private foraging walks for hen parties, birthdays, wedding anniversaries, corporate team days, the WI, and various colleges and universities.
